Why not replace mass agriculture with agriculture by the masses?

The problems of modern agriculture are numerous, but the solutions, not so much. Local organic agriculture can (and will) transform society in positive ways, but the limiting factor is our numbers. Our world needs more small-scale farmers!

Feeding people locally is hard work, but it can be part of a fulfilling lifestyle with a deep sense of connection with the land and the community. I propose that we work together towards growing the pie, inviting more people to our tables, all while refining our craft by continuously finding and sharing more efficient ways of running human-scale farms.

My goal is to share the tools, techniques and inspiration for you to succeed as a market gardener, grow amazing produce for your family and community all while making a lucrative small business out of it.

There's a lot of opportunity out there and with some enthusiasm and the right methodology, you can make this happen. I strongly believe there has never been a better time to get into farming.

Jean-Martin Fortier (JM) is a farmer, educator and author specializing in organic and biologically intensive cropping practices.  His award-winning book, The Market Gardener, has inspired tens of thousands of readers worldwide to reimagine human-scale food systems.  His message is one of empowerment in order to educate, encourage and inspire people into pursuing a farming career and lifestyle.

He is the founder, with his wife Maude-Hélène Desroches, of Les Jardins de la Grelinette, an internationally recognized 10-acre micro-farm in Quebec, Canada. With only 1½ acres cultivated in permanent beds, the farm grosses more than 100 000$ per acre with operating margins of about 60 per cent, enough to financially sustain his family. The focus at La Grelinette has been to grow better, not bigger, in order to optimize the cropping system, making it more lucrative and viable in the process.

In his new farming project, Ferme des Quatre-Temps, he has set out to further demonstrate how diversified small-scale farms, using regenerative and economically efficient agricultural practices, can produce a higher nutritional quality of food and more profitable farms.

La Ferme des Quatre-Temps' model includes livestock raised according to holistic management principles and incorporates permaculture design into its operations.

Beyond offering a new model for polyculture farming in Quebec, Ferme des Quatre-Temps is training a new cohort of young farmers with the intention of giving them the know-how, experience and resources to start their own innovative agricultural projects.

As an educator, JM places a strong emphasis on intelligent farm design, appropriate technologies and harnessing the power of soil biology as key components of successful farming. A storyteller who can weave the technical aspects of farming with anecdotes from his farm, JM has facilitated hundreds of workshops, seminars and conferences in Canada, Europe, Australia and the United States.

He has written for farming magazines such as Canadian Organic Grower, La Terre de Chez Nous, Growing for Market and Mother Earth News and also serves as a tool advisor for companies such as Johnny’s Selected Seeds and Dubois Agrinovation.

JM has been widely featured in the mainstream media, as well as in countless specialized publications, radio shows and podcasts. Along his travels, he was dubbed "The Rockstar Farmer". He hopes such recognition of food producers will advocate more support for the emerging new generation of small-scale farmers.

When he is not on the farm or traveling the world to teach and exchange with other farmers, JM can be found selling his veggies at the world-famous Montreal Jean-Talon Market on Saturdays from April to December.
